Game of Thrones takes its story from many influences: the War of the Roses, King Arthur, Norse and Celtic myth as well as modern classics. Will the story end like Lord of the Rings or completely invert it? How about Ragnarok with its three-year Winter of the Winds and Winter of the Wolf? Pop culture author Valerie Estelle Frankel examines the sources and predicts the likeliest Game of Thrones ending. By tracing the prophecies of the early books, which correspond directly to the steps of the heroine’s journey, Daenerys’s surprising path becomes clear as she will “wake the dragon” and harness a surprising magic. Is Jon Snow destined to be her lover, her nemesis, her sacrifice, or all three? And what of Bran? Or Tyrion? What does Varys really want? In the end, the key to salvation lies in the forgotten lore hidden at Oldtown and Dragonstone, in the words of the Faceless Men and the Red Priests.
